Five Minutes With... Blek le Rat
What’s your favourite place in the world to be?
If I talk of art, London is the best place in the world to be. Talking of a resting place, I would say Brittany is place where I love to go to for a rest.
If you weren’t a successful artist where do you think life would have taken you?
As an architect I assume.
Do you have any weird and wonderful superstitions?
Just to talk about superstitions is a superstition... I believe in dreams.
When you look at a piece of art how do you decide whether you like it?
I have seen and studied thousands of pieces of art in my life . I have no rule to decide if I like a piece or not. I would say that it’s the same thing with music: we can love a piece of music at the first moment of listening it and then replay the same piece of music hundreds of times that same day and then get tired of it.
What is your life philosophy?
Try to reach the goal that I have decided to reach.
When was your first experience of a piece of art that really affected you?
Dali’s painting when I was fifteen years old, "Partial hallucination. Six apparitions of Lenin on a piano."
What do you remember about that piece? Why did it speak to you?
I was with a member of my family and I was fifteen years old. The painting was being showed at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and I just remember a huge piece in a huge room, something very well painted and I really felt like I was seeing an hallucination .
Can art ever truly be “owned”?
Yes, of course. Owning a piece of art at home gives you huge pleasure.
Do you think that art can change the world?
I'll try to give an interpretation of my own world in my time: I believe it is possible to change the way of thinking in some people with art. If it can change the way of the whole world? I am not sure of that.
Who would you tip as the next big artist to watch right now?
I don’t know, but i am sure it will be a street artist!
