Five Minutes With... Piers Bourke

What’s your morning routine?

Taking Mink our “Pugalier” ( Pug/King Charles spaniel) for a walk as I drop of my 2 boys off at the school bus.  And then go for a run before it gets too hot.

Piers' Pugalier Mink!

Do you speak any foreign languages? If not, what one would you magically like to speak fluently by tomorrow?

No none I am useless, wouldn’t mind being able to speak Mandarin, I could then understand my boys who learn and speak it at school.

Do you have a party trick?

Not sure I do….falling asleep at the table does that count….?

What was your breakthrough moment in becoming an artist?

Getting into art school and being taken on by my first gallery.

Why do you think it’s important for us to have art in our homes?

I believe it allows us to show our personality and creates good talking points. How we as individuals respond to art is what makes the whole process so exciting and keeps us coming back for more.

What’s your favourite artistic medium and why?

Photography…is that a medium or a process?  If so, it allows me to look at detail that my eye and memory would never be able to record. This is important because I often hear photographers talking about spontaneity to capture their subject, but for me it has to be well considered and taken in a very measured way.

If you could be another famous artist, who would you be (past or present?)

Past : A Renaissance painter like Giovanni Bellini, the combination of the figurative and use of perspective is incredible, always draws me in. Would also allow me lots of assistants too !

Present : Photographer Nadav Kander his images of the Yangtze River are simply stunning.

If you ruled the world for a day, what would be the one thing you’d change?

I’d stop cyclists being so righteous when they are on the roads in London…..I don’t even live in London or  have a car at the moment and it still annoys me …..haha !!
