GET TO KNOW THE ARTISTS IN OUR LOVE EXHIBITION
Love means many things to many people. In our latest feel-good show, we’ve brought together an eclectic group of artists to put connection, self-love and narcissism under the magnifying glass. The supporting interview series explores what inspires the artists that are currently inspiring us.
As both an artist and practising psychotherapist, Johan Deckmann uses found objects and pensive phrases to provide satirical commentary on the complexities of life. The right words can be like good medicine and his works push towards self-reflection with plenty of humour.
What does the word “love” mean to you?
For me, the word love is an all-encompassing word that applies in virtually every context. True love is the strongest yet most fragile thing in the world. Because it can heal you if you are lucky to experience it and it can destroy you if you lose it.
Which artists influenced your outlook on the arts?
Marisol, Claes Oldenburg, Louise Bourgeois, Lucio Fontana, Bram Bogart, Allen Jones, Robert Rauschenberg, Tom Wesselmann and photographer Sam Haskins.
When are you the most inspired?
When I'm awake. By that I mean I’m not particularly dream-driven. I’m inspired by everything around me, which unfortunately also includes people who treat other people inappropriately. That’s why my works, which often have a humorous expression, often also contain a serious depth. I don't want to sound arrogant but I always feel inspired. I guess I’m blessed with what you might call a very positive and optimistic mindset. I never wake up with a feeling like “This is going to be a bad day”. So I always carry a notebook and I’m always in a kind of observing position.
What is your biggest achievement?
My children.
If you could switch lives with one person for a day, who would it be?
A globetrotter.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in life?
To appreciate the present moment because it will never come back.
Which up-and-coming artists are you excited by?
Louise Giovanelli, Henni Alftan, Kelli Vance and Alice Tippit. So currently female artists.
What’s your favourite thing in the world?
My family.
What are you reading right now?
The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart from 1971. A novel about the psychology of chance.
What project are you currently working on?
More words in different shapes.
