Get ready for the RA’s Summer Exhibition

The world’s largest open-submission exhibition is back

Not only is the weather finally getting warmer, the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition is here to declare the start of summer.

The annual event, which opens its doors next Tuesday until the end of August, is one of the longest-running and best-loved open-submission art exhibitions in the world. Since 1769, it has run without interruption and features a diverse range of artworks by invited artists and submissions from the public across painting, sculpture, photography and printmaking.

This year, renowned British painter Professor David Remfry RA takes the reins as coordinator, exploring the theme Only Connect.

Among the 1,614 featured works will be three new ceramic pieces by British artist Lindsey Mendick and works by Barbados-born painter Paul Dash, Royal Academy Schools graduates Jenkin van Zyl and Harminder Judge and Colombian sculptor Carlos Zapata. A dramatic mobile installation by Irish fashion designer Richard Malone hangs theatrically in the Central Hall, too.

Expect some Loughran favourites

The exhibition also features work by Royal Academicians Tracey Emin, Gillian Wearing and the late Paula Rego, plus Loughran Gallery artists Nancy Cadogan and Chris Levine.

Cadogan’s painting ‘Hot Tea, Cool Day’ can be found in the room curated by committee member Clare Woods.

Nancy told us: ‘I am so happy to be included in this year’s Summer Exhibition within the theme of 'Only Connect'. It is such a celebration of an exhibition about work being made today, and I am honoured to be part of it.”

Most of the works on display in the Summer Exhibition are available to buy and sales support the exhibiting artists and the RA's charitable work to train the next generation of artists. Get your tickets at www.royalacademy.org.uk
