The tigers are loose in the city! WWF has just launched an AR-mazing Tiger Trail that spreads out across the city from Gardens by the Bay, to National Gallery, The Fullerton Heritage, Sentosa and even all the way in Changi. The trail consists of 33 life-sized tiger sculptures designed by a collective of internationally acclaimed artists from Singapore and beyond that shines line on how climate change, poaching, and deforestation if affecting tigers in their wild.
As part of the pledge to double the number of tigers in the wild by 2022, WWF hopes to be able to engage visitors through Instagram AR features and online quizzes which are unlocked at each sculpture. The number of wild cats in the wild has fallen from about 100,000 at the start of the 20th century down to 3,900 remaining now, with Southeast Asia facing the most urgent crisis. In SEA alone, the tigers have gone extinct in Cambodia, Laos PDR, and Vietnam, with the Malayan tigers on the verge of exctinction. WWF is supporting on-ground work in tiger landscapes that are home to around 80% of the world's remaining wild tigers.
Highlights of the statues include Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones) with his stark and blunt strokes of a realistic tiger, a toned down but still striking artwork of visual artist Jake Chapman on the paradox of opposing animal extinction and exploitation of human activity, Phannapast who clearly foils the romanticism of nature against the wild nature of animals in a gorgeous matte black-designed tiger.
