Maddie Rose Hills

biography

Maddie Rose Hills is an artist living and working in South London. She has exhibited in London, Paris and Barcelona, and undertaken residencies in London and Iceland. Her work is in the British Airways Public Collection as well as private collections in France, Poland and London. Hills graduated in 2015 from The University of West England with a first class honors degree.

Attributing her appreciation for the arts to her mother, Maddie began to make work at an early age building a body of representational and figurative work, which has evolved and abstracted organically over time through her interest and exploration of media.  Encompassing a mass of texture and colour inspired by vast natural landscapes the oversize visceral canvases she has become known for extend from the allure of play and experimentation and aim to draw the viewer in with their unearthly beauty. Captivatingly curious the urge to inspect the lava like surfaces of her works is irresistible; where surging, seething, swirling patterns materialise and highlight the acute awareness and attention to detail in her work.

Hills' work explores time and memory using the medium of paint and found materials to create layers that conceal and reveal existing marks. The paintings, each taking between a month and a number of years to create, often explore perception and memory relating to place; be that a landscape or space that she has spent time in. An interest in the materiality of paint is at the fore of Hills' practice.
