Marc Quinn designs for Lady Dior
Fashion house Dior has opened the doors of its new Peter Marino-designed boutique on London’s famous New Bond Street. The spectacular stone interior; so unmistakably Dior, is cushioned with silk carpets and the neo-Louis XVI style furniture, which echoes the spirit of a Parisian hôtel particulier. Housing women's ready-to-wear and accessories, alongside jewelry, timepieces, Baby Dior, Dior Homme, and childrens clothes, The House of Dior also offers three private salons for VIP clients, as well as a perfume area in which exclusive creations and the Collection Privée Christian Dior can be found.
To celebrate the opening, leading contemporary artist Marc Quinn was invited to reimagine the iconic Lady Dior bag – amongst other small leather accessories – turning them into limited edition works of art...swoon! Lady Dior was born of a desire to create a bag with a strong identity - something instantly recognizable. Initially known as "Chouchou" ("Favorite"), it was renamed as a tribute to Princess Diana who fell in love with it on a trip to Paris.
Quinn’s designs incorporate motifs from his hyper-realistic original oil paintings, including the dramatically coloured In The Night Garden, whose beauty belies a sinister subtext: the relentless human desire to control nature; and Fossil Record, which features a stunning orchid flower relief embossed onto silver leather.
Another depicts We Share Our Chemistry With The Stars, these iris paintings reflect that the visual sense dominates our perception of the world, the artist observes: ‘the etymology of 'iris' is derived from the Greek word for 'rainbow', and in the colours…there is a kind of celebration of individuality.’
The ultimate accessory updated; Mark Quinn brings some serious sass to Lady Dior, making these limited edition, leather artworks “chouchou” once more!
